I love a challenge, especially one that challenges my creative skills. So when I was asked to do makeup and hair a few weeks ago for a Great Gatsby-themed event, I made sure that I moved my schedule around so that it could be done. I have always wanted to do styling for a 1920’s themed event, and I had never done the ‘finger-waves’ hairstyle that was popular for women in the 1920’s. I couldn’t wait to do these girls hair and makeup and I spent a lot of time researching and looking up Pinterest images to prepare for the event.
I wasn’t certain of the history of ‘finger-waves’. The definition is as follows:
A finger wave is a method of setting hair into waves (curls) that was popular in the 1920s and 1930s and in the late 1990s in North America and Europe. The process involves pinching the hair between the fingers and combing the hair in alternating directions to make a wave shape. A lotion was applied to the hair to help it retain its shape. According to “Techniques of the 1920s and 1930s”: Finger waves were developed in the 1920s to add style to, and soften the hard appearance of, the bobbed hairstyles that became very popular during the flapper period. Many Hollywood movie stars wore the latest finger waves which contributed to the popularity and evolution of this style.
Of course, being the whirlwind that it was on the day of the event, I didn’t grab any photos except one side-profile photo on my phone! However the girls sent me a few snapshots from the event. I was super happy with my finger-waves style and then the jewelry pins that one client had brought along to be used for accents in her hair.
The great key to finger waves is using clips to hold the style in place and good product. I used Kevin Murphy Hair Resort Spray, and then simple metal hair clips to hold it in place while I curled and rolled the back of the hair. I left them in until the last minute and gently brush it out with a horsehair brush. I was super happy with the results as was the client!
Overall I had such a fun time with these women and I really enjoyed the challenge of doing a themed Hair and Makeup. Sometimes challenging ourselves creatively can really open up our minds and help us with discovering new skills that we enjoy.
Last I want to thank everyone who participated in my survey! I have a number of new readers thanks to my friend Maria Killam giving me a mention that led to some fresh sets of eyes reading my posts. I thank every SINGLE PERSON, that filled out my survey, and I am slowly digesting all of the feedback and doing some discovery work with a new graphic designer and web designer. Stay tuned and keep reading for some new features, a new look and more to come in the coming year. I am so excited with all of the possibilities going forward that I could burst!
And the WINNER IS………
