After 2+ years of working on having a larger web presence and working solely as a freelancer after leaving my Direct Sales business behind, I have been asked many times by other starting entrepreneurs, ‘How do you Make Money Blogging?’.
It seems that many people are sick of heading to an office everyday, or doing parties at night, and are desperate to find a way to make it their own way, on their own terms. And 10 years ago, you may have opened a boutique (I did that, and strongly advise against it) thinking that you could create your own experience and have fun with customers. But today in 2015, things are different.
To quote my friend, successful entrepreneur and blogger Maria Killam, ‘Your laptop is the new Mom & Pop Shop’ – or in 2017, I will take it further and say that your mobile device is the new Mom & Pop shop.
There really isn’t one easy answer, about how to make money blogging but most bloggers who have been blogging for a longer length of time, do make money blogging.
It takes a lot of hard work, consistency, money spent and continuous education. Blogging has completely changed since I started doing it haphazardly in 2010. And it is poised to continue to change even more over the next 5 years.
Think of this statistic: by 2020, Everyone in the world will be on the internet. Three years ago, people were still on the fence about Facebook, now your parents, your Grandparents, and other early nay-sayers, are on Facebook. It has become another form of connection and community.
So if you have been thinking about starting a blog, and you want to be able to make a business out of it, the first thing you have to do is just START.
Don’t wait for the perfect time, the perfect branding or even the best web designer to help you out. You can just sign up for a WordPress Site, and get writing with a pre-made template. Because in 6 months, you will evolve and learn and change your mind about your presence and what you can and want to do.
A very wise Professor and Artist that I had at the University of Manitoba ID School, Grant Marshall, said, “Just because you draw a line on a piece of paper doesn’t mean you have to fall in love with it.”
The same is true of your website, your business cards and your branding. Don’t fall too far in love because it will need to evolve and change as you do.
So how can you somehow make MONEY at Blogging? That is really what you want to know, right?
- Get out there and meet people. If you want to write your own ticket and sit and work on your own you have to get out and meet people because people still invest in people. There needs to be authenticity behind what you do. Your online presence, social media is very very important to building your brand, but also the connections you make in person will make all of the difference. Most blogger start earning income through sub-contracting their work, either by writing for other bloggers or teaching others what they know. Learn to be an expert with your own blog, and then you can teach others to do the same.
- Write from the heart. Writing and aligning yourself with other brands, especially like-minded brands that share the same core values as you do, expands your reach not only to their brand, but to their readers. Sharing your own work on social media is great, but connecting with like-minded brands will get your work out there even more. My friend, Elise Lininger, who is an excellent marketer for Le-Vel Thrive and an all-around great person, shared one of my posts 2+ years ago, which gave me a spike in traffic and brought me many new readers.
- Affiliates on small Blogs will make money too. Affiliates – in which a business rewards one or more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought by the affiliate’s own marketing efforts – are an easy and trouble-free way to add to your income each month. So some of those links you see in my sidebar? Those are affiliate links, and when you click and purchase, I get a small percentage. There are plenty of affiliate networks to apply to online. One of the many brands that I have done very well with promoting is Grace & Lace. I feel that it is important to only promote brands your believe in, that align with your core values. Amazon Affiliates is another popular affiliate in which any blogger can make a little extra income by adding in links within the text of their blog.
This is only touching the tip of How You Can Blog as a Business and Make Money. Get creative about what your skill set is, and you can really hone in on a product or service that fits a specific niche. The web has gotten so large, that if you can find your target audience that is very specific and solve a pain point or problem for them, you will make money.
Over the past 3 years, I have learned a lot and I am more than happy to share my journey, and what I learn along the way, with all of you.
