The first day you sign your child up for a recreational sports or dance class, it is very hard to picture them as strong confident dancers 10 or 15 years later, when they are excelling in their sport. My two girls have both been dancing since the age of 3, and never in my wildest dreams did I think that they would still be loving and enjoying dance at 15 and 17 (now 18). Costumes and competitions, workshops and travel have all been a part of our lives over the past dozen years, and while I’ve seen other kids come and go from the dance studio, my girls are still as engaged as they were on day one.
To be honest, Isabella cried a lot at first in her pre-school dance class. She missed her mom and wasn’t too keen on playing with balloons in baby ballet. However she got over it quickly and by age 4 she was learning to skip and follow directions. So if you have started your kid in a sport, and they want to quit right away, don’t give up. It may just take some time for them to warm up to the idea.
I think that all of the years of learning choreography has helped both of my girls to learn memorize, which in turn, has helped them with their studies in school too. And of course, the wonderful dance teachers and mentors they have had over the years has helped shaped them both into strong dancers and caring, kind individuals.
For the past few years, our studio has arranged for the Senior Competitive Dancers to get Creative Dance Photos done by Surrey Photographer Gemini Visuals. I have done some behind the scenes work with photographer Adrienne Thiessen, and I am in awe at her calm and creativity when doing dance photos. It takes a certain skill-level and creative eye to make sure that the fabric is flowing right, the lighting is perfect and that the dancers toes are pointed and their legs are straight.
Adrienne from Gemini Visuals has generously offered a $50 off coupon for readers of my blog in the Lower Mainland of Vancouver area (or anywhere in BC, if you plan to travel to her studio in Surrey) who book a Photo Package with her before October 31st, 2018 (*offer excludes mini sessions).
