When to hire an Expert for your wedding…Top 3 reasons!

There are a number of reasons to hire a professional on your wedding day, especially when it comes to hair and makeup. Here are my Top 3 Reasons:

1. Your Sister/Aunt/Friend may be good at doing hair or your makeup when you go out on the town dancing, but do they know what it takes to have you look your best for photographs? Or do your hair so that it stays all day?! Many people try to cut corners if they have a tight wedding budget, but if you want to look your best ALL DAY, then certainly hair and makeup should be left to the professionals.

2. A professional may suggest something you haven’t thought of! You have been doing your makeup the same way since you started wearing it at age 14. However, maybe there are some new techniques and tricks that will help you to look more dewy or refreshed in your wedding pictures. Consulting with a professional may show you that you can look even better than you thought possible.

3. It is less stressful to have someone come and do it for you! Have you ever had those days when things just don’t go right with your hair? Same with your makeup? Well someone who does it all the time knows exactly how to troubleshoot problems and also keep the energy calm and serene right before a wedding. That alone is reason enough to have an expert do it for you!

This hairstyle on the bride below, I acheived by using a knotting technique that I learned years ago. It is a combination of curling the pieces, then tying a series of knots and pinning it. The photos below show the process of during and after. I think the bride was pleased!

How are you thinking of doing your hair on your wedding day?

How to do a 1970′s Makeup Application

I get so many people asking me about how to do various makeup styles from different genres. Clearly the 1970′s is a really popular era, as my short post on 70′s makeup gets a lot of reader traffic! I don’t get many opportunities to do makeup from different eras, but it seems like the 1970′s are really influencing fashion and makeup looks right now so there is plenty of inspiration out there! here are some of my personal faves…

You have to love the Twiggy-style eye in the first photo. There are ways to really layer your mascara but I particularly love putting false lashes on both top and bottom. If you are like me, you bottom lashes are sparse and spidery so trying to coat all three with mascara doesn’t necessarily look so great! I also find that this look is best on blue eyes….somehow with brown eyes it can turn into a smokey looking mess. I also like it with a lighter lip, which is also shown in this 1970′s image of Brigitte Bardot.

This image shows my other favourite look that I find very hard to replicate! i’s almost a smudged red cheek and then a certain type of glossy lip. You can tell that this is not a sticky gloss like a lip glaze from MAC, but rather more like a vaseline kind of product layered over red. The key to getting this look on the eyes, is rimming the inner rims with a cobalt blue eyeliner, black on top and then using a peachy orange shadow. The contrast of the blue and orange is key. In the movie Boogie Nights, Julianne Moore’s character had this style of makeup on throughout the movie, and very brushed up brows as well. Heather Graham (who is really so beautiful and never looks bad!) had beautiful makeup, inlcuding that glossy red lip, that was true to the era too.

So my favourite eye look from the 70′s is good old blue eyeshadow with loads of mascara. I practiced this on my kids – the key is wetting the eyeshadow and using lots of primer before. Here are two looks, one blue-green and one blue.

I will post more 70′s photos soon!

Should I Sign up to be a Stella & Dot Stylist?

This is something that I hear from women many times when they are thinking of possibly signing up as a stylist. I really do find that this is a hard question to answer, as everyone has a different story and many reasons to attempt this type of business. But it is the question I get asked often. When I hear this question, what they are really asking is ‘help me figure out if this is the best decision for me’.

Here are some questions you may ask yourself:

1. Do you like people?

Maybe you have never done sales or even worked in any type of customer service, but do you like people? Because hosting jewelry parties (trunk shows in our lingo!) is about connecting with people, creating a relationship and trust so that a) they value your opinion, and b) they may consider inviting you into their home. And this must be genuine, not contrived or forced. You have to have a sincere interest in someone’s life because that sincerity shines through! When considering inviting people into your own home, don’t you only invite people you like? You want to be that girl that other girls want to hang with for an afternoon or evening. Personally, I love connecting with people and learning about their life, how they live and what is important to them. I find that being genuinely interested and then finding things in common with them helps me to continuously keep my calendar busy.

2. Are you okay with working odd hours?

Sometimes, although the beauty of this type of business is that you can make your own hours, our guests have their own schedules so you have to be flexible about booking parties. I don’t particularly love working Friday night, Saturday night and then Sunday afternoon all in a row, but if I can do three shows in one weekend, woohoo! I may get the next entire week off! So it is flexible, but you also have to be flexible. if you are a 9-5 or punch-in, punch-out kinda girl, then you may not really like this kinda thing.

3.Are you very technically savvy? Are you willing to take the time to learn to be?

Social media (Facebook, Twitter, blogs) are a FREE way to market yourself and your business and simply put, make finding and connecting with others much easier. If you cannot or do not know how to do this, then you really MUST be willing to learn. You don’t have to be a tech superstar, but you have to be open to learning a few simple things and not afraid to make a mistake or two while doing it.  The same goes for the Stella & Dot website; there is so much on the site that is     set up to help your business that you have to be open to surfing around and learning it. If this is not something you can do or want to do, then it will be much harder to work your business. Stella & Dot is leading edge in technology when it comes to the Direct sales world, so not taking advantage of that is like washing your clothes in the river instead of using a washing machine. It really is advantageous to learn the technology.

4. Can you think beyond the product?

What I mean by this is that you can purchase samples and catalogues in a smart and strategic way? While the jewelry is beautiful and you may want to purchase all of it, it probably isn’t the best business move unless you are really selling enough before hand. This is not just shopping for jewelry for yourself, but also purchasing samples of pieces that OTHER people will like. So separating your love for all things cute and fashionable with your business is imperative. In my last business, I spent boatloads of money building a boutique that I wanted to hang out in all day. However, I never did separate my love for creating beautiful thing with my BUDGET! And that got me into trouble later on.

So there you have it. Should you sign up as a Stella & Dot stylist? These are the few questions I would ask you to reflect upon first. If you decide that you would rather be suited to be a hostess and have a party yourself, then you know who to call!! Me! And I truly am interested in learning about YOU!

Beautiful Chilliwack Boudoir

I have been a lazy blogger and have not posted for over a month (bad!) and I just find that there are so many jobs and hardly any time! I guess everyone is affected by the “busy-syndrome” and really it comes down to choice and what we choose to spend our time on. While I love writing and posting creative projects, my spare time gets eaten up my other things like Facebook, Pinterest and my beautiful kids!

So well over a month ago, I had the opportunity to work again with Michelle Horsman, who is a really thoughtful and picturesque photographer. I recently spent some time at her home in Chilliwack and she is like a mini Martha Stewart….very organized, fabulous style (and a terrific British accent!). I came away from her home wanting to organize my closets and clean my kitchen! She does party planning too! Check out Perfect parties by Michelle.

I did the makeup and hair for a Boudoir marathon in Chilliwack that Michelle organized. I picked a few of two ladies that said I could share, so I could show the makeup and of course, Michelle’s fabulous photography.

Thanks Michelle for the opportunity! Looking forward to working with you June 23rd!
